Contingency reporting that shows exposure before it becomes an overrun

How to move beyond the remaining contingency line and connect pending changes to projected costs and capital.

Contingency remaining is not the same as contingency available. The useful figure reflects approved changes, pending exposures, forecast-to-complete changes and the remaining ability to absorb risk.

Maintain four separate measures

Use the original contingency, approved transfers or uses, probability-weighted pending exposure and an estimate of remaining unidentified risk. Do not net unapproved changes against approved budget without disclosure.

  • Original and current contingency
  • Approved uses
  • Pending and potential exposures
  • Forecast reserve adequacy

Make exposure visible across projects

Some assets may have healthy reserves while others are consuming cash. Portfolio reporting should identify where contingency is tightest and whether cash sources can legally and practically be moved between entities.

Tie changes to funding consequences

Whenever the forecast-to-complete changes, update the draw forecast, remaining equity requirement and impact on projected investment returns. That makes cost risk actionable for leadership.

Use an exception-based review

Each month, discuss only changes that could alter an upcoming funding decision, loan covenant, delivery timing or investor communication. Keep the underlying register available for anyone who needs detail.
